The Guam Environmental Protection Agency (Guam EPA) is offering free Radon Awareness workshops for the public.
The workshops will take place at the Guam EPA conference room during the following times:
✔ 4:30 p.m., Friday, January 25, 2008
✔ 9 a.m., Monday, January 28, 2008
✔ 9 a.m., Wednesday, January 30, 2008
Each workshop will include an informational presentation about radon and a demonstration of the equipment used to test homes for radon. There will also a discussion about different ways to reduce radon levels indoor. Members from all sectors of the community are encouraged to attend one of the three workshops.
"Guam EPA wants everyone to understand the health risks associated with high levels of radon and how to protect themselves and their families," said Lorilee T. Crisostomo, administrator of Guam EPA. "These workshops are part of our ongoing efforts to educate the public about this important topic."
High levels of radon have been associated with lung cancer. One in three homes on Guam that has been tested for radon had elevated levels of the gas. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that radon causes the death of about 20,000 Americans every year, even more deaths than from drunk driving.
Because radon has no color, odor or taste, the only way to determine if your home has high levels of the gas is by using a free testing kit from Guam EPA. The workshops are being offered during January as part of National Radon Awareness Month.
Radon is an inert, noble gas that occurs naturally during the breakdown of rock and soil. Levels of radon outdoors are typically low and not harmful. The gas becomes harmful as the concentration increases indoors. Prolonged exposure to high levels of radon can increase the potential for lung cancer.
