The Guam Environmental Protection Agency (Guam EPA), along with partners in the Environmental Education Subcommittee of the Guam Watershed Planning Committee, today announced the 2007 Liberation Day Parade Aluminum Recycling Contest.
To enter the contest, families or groups can bring their aluminum cans to collection sites at Serena Plaza or to the old ACME building along the parade route from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. only on Liberation Day. Entrants will be paid for their recyclable cans. The five groups who bring the largest amount of cans will receive free reserved camping site permits for the 2008 Liberation Day parade. Winners will also chose their site for the 2008 parade before the public distribution of permits.
The contest is part of making the Liberation Day parade an "eco-friendly" Island Pride event. Residents not participating in the contest are encouraged to use the bright blue and green bins along the parade route to recycle cans. All other waste should be placed in trash containers next to the recycling bins along the route. The bins were painted by the Department of Youth Affairs. They will be almost 100 recycling and trash cans along the parade route and they will be emptied throughout the day by volunteers.
"Recycling as much as possible is an important part of managing our solid waste effectively," said Guam EPA Administrator Lorilee T. Crisostomo. "This Liberation Day everyone can help protect our environment and conserve resources by recycling aluminum cans and throwing trash away properly."
Members of the Environmental Education Subcommittee of the Guam Watershed Planning Committee include Guam EPA, Office of the Governor, Guam Coastal Management Program, the Bureau of Statistics and Plans, Guam Department of Agriculture, The Nature Conservancy, National Park Service, University of Guam Cooperative Extension Service and Marine Lab, and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.
